Hangin In There
Hunters first week in this world has been an eventful one. Late Saturday night after Tasha and I left the NICU her respirator was set at 26 the highest it's been since her birth. This wasn't great news but she had 6 straight days of sustained progress leading up to this setback. The doctors attributed it to fatigue caused by earlier attempts to try to ween her off the respirator earlier in the day. They try to set the vent at a low setting and have her breathe on her own as much as possible. This takes a lot of energy and she eventually needs more assistant from the respirator. Its the perfect example of the up and downs we will face during the coming months. What gives us hope is when the doctors talk about what the will be doing "next week". It lets us know she is still in everyones plans. On Sunday they added an arterial line in her arm. It was hard to see her with new hardware on her arm. The doctors say it doesn't hurt her but we cannot help but feel pain when we see her with a new apparatus attached to her. Other than that she had a pretty peacefully Sunday and she recorded her first weight gain. It is standard for newborns, preemie or full term, to loose weight during their first week. She went from .650 kg to .545 kg in a week. Sunday however she gained back half the weight she lost. I got to see her today briefly and she was kicking her legs pretty frequently. She looked as if she was dreaming. What she was dreaming about, we can only imagine. When Tasha touched her hand she said Gracey got spunky and smacked her. I wasn't there to see it, I was on the road by then, but I can only imagine. She's a handful, literally. Her vent was down to 18 and her feeding is up to 3 cc. They continue to up the amount of her feeding .5 every feeding as long as her body can tolerate it. She had another weight gain today. She gained about .25 kg. Hopefully she can continue to gain weight which will lead to the strength she needs to separate her from her vent. We are not in a hurry however she still has a lot of growing to do in the upcoming weeks and we plan on having her around for a long time.

Hi Gracey, all I can say to you is I LOVE YOU.
May the power of the Holy Spirt be near us, O Lord mercifully to cleanse our hearts and defend us from all harm.
